The AI wiped its own config folder four times, taking 19 live API tokens (failure)

The AI’s own processes silently wiped and recreated the user's entire ~/.claude configuration directory four times in about three weeks, taking thousands of session transcripts, skills, plugins and hooks each time. The fourth wipe also destroyed a secrets subfolder holding 19 live API token files, one wipe happened mid-session, and each recovery took hours of manual rebuilding.

This one went wrong. Read what happened so you don’t hit the same problem.

How it works

  1. The AI processes wipe and recreate ~/.claude (late August: about 3,572 transcripts plus skills, plugins and hooks gone)
  2. It repeats on Sep 8, wiping the whole folder
  3. It repeats Sep 12 at 07:29, taking 7,462 transcripts
  4. It repeats again Sep 12 around 09:28, this time including a secrets subfolder with 19 live API token files
  5. The user rebuilds the setup by hand after each wipe

Why it’s worth knowing

The tool deleted its own brain four times: the configuration, history and credentials the AI needs were destroyed by the AI itself, with no command from the user.
