The AI built my tool for spotting ships that stay off AIS

Over two weeks the AI built his hobby tool that matches free Sentinel-1 radar images with live AIS ship data around Denmark, recording AIS either side of each satellite pass on its own and marking radar spots with no ship as leads. In one check 2 to 5 of about 555 pairings were wrong.

How it works

  1. Tool records AIS 15 minutes before and after each satellite pass
  2. Radar spots are paired with AIS signals by position, speed and course
  3. Spots left over are marked red
  4. He checked pairings by hand and the AI adjusted the program to catch the pairs he marked as certain

Why it’s worth knowing

Free radar pictures from space plus live ship signals can show which ships are silent. The AI built the whole matching tool, down to fixing the shift a fast ferry makes on radar.
